Chris Broad, the former England batsman and father of Stuart, may be prevented from standing as the match referee for this summer’s Tests despite being the only eligible person to do so after neutral umpires and officials were temporarily scrapped.

The ICC announced this week that home umpires and officials would be used in Test matches for the first time since 2002 to prevent international travel and minimise health risks. Broad is the only English match referee on the ICC’s panel.

But to avoid accusations of a conflict of interest because of the likelihood of Broad Jr being in the England team, the ICC may now be forced to bring in one of the other members of the seven-man international panel of referees or “promote”
