Prince Harry has spoken out to offer his support to a charity championed by his late mother Princess Diana amid the coronavirus crisis. The HALO Trust works to remove landmines in Angola and was visited by the Prince during his and Meghan Markle’s tour of Southern Africa last autumn.
Prince Harry’s message in full
Harry’s moving message was shared by the Halo Trust on March 26
Prince Harry wrote: “In these trying times, hope comes from the light of our common humanity.
“Nowhere is that light burning brighter than at The HALO Trust.
“As countries closed their borders, lockdowns came into force and international travel became harder, many might have chosen to suspend operations. Instead, HALO kept open a presence in all 25 of its country operations.”

The Duke visited HALO’s operations in Angola in September 2019 when he retraced the footsteps of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who visited a minefield being cleared by HALO in 1997.
The Duke who has been spending lockdown in Los Angeles since moving there with Meghan and their son Archie in March wrote: “What a difference a few months can make.”
“The fact that you can operate across conflict-affected countries like Afghanistan is also a precious resource in the face of a disease that recognises no frontlines.”

“It is at times like this that the work and efforts of people like you – prepared to do whatever it takes to help, serve and protect others – shines through.
“In sometimes hazardous and dangerous situations, your commitment to your communities and people who need your help is remarkable.
“I am hugely proud to be able to support such an extraordinary organisation.”
Despite stepping down as working royals Meghan and Harry intend to keep honouring their charitable ties.

HALO’s CEO James Cowan expressed his gratitude at Harry’s ‘thoughtful’ message.
Mr Cowan said: “It is very thoughtful of the Duke to write to HALO staff in this way.
“Not many people realise we do more than landmine clearance.
“In responding to Covid we have the skills and equipment to respond. And above all we can operate in some very dangerous places with the trust of the local people.”

Prince Harry and Meghan have settled in the USA where they are expected to remain for the foreseeable future.
The couple marked their son Archie Harrison’s first birthday earlier this month and delighted fans with an adorable new video.
The clip of Meghan and Archie reading together was shared by Save the Children UK to raise money for the British charity during the pandemic.
While Meghan and Harry were expected back in Britain with Archie to visit the Queen at Balmoral this summer the trip is unlikely to go-ahead due to coronavirus.
