Forget Terminators, says US military, the next-gen AI battles will hinge upon net facilities, not killer robotics

The country to control modern-day warfare with AI will not have always constructed the most lethal killer robot or algorithm– it’ll be the one that has the best infrastructure to support and rapidly release new innovations in the battleground, according to US military professionals.

Colonel Brad Boyd, the chief of Joint Warfighting Operations at the Department of Defense’s Joint Expert system Center (JAIC), stated the most essential work is “all the unsexy things.” The ability to gather information, curate it, and move it flawlessly across software pipelines to train new systems or enhance old models is more vital than establishing the best self-governing weapon.

” What we’re working the hardest on is infrastructure, that is where the fight of 20 years will be won,” he stated during a press briefing on Thursday. “It’s not who has the most splendid algorithm– that will be obsolete in 20 years– it will be who has the very best facilities that will still be around in 50 years.”

The JAIC last month awarded a contract worth approximately $106 m over four years to Deloitte Consulting to construct a custom cloud platform called the Joint Common Structure ( JCF) for the Pentagon. The management consultancy company will not be developing the software application itself, in real military contractor design.

Rather, it’s in charge of sub-contracting cloud companies that will do all the nitty-gritty work. Said outfits have yet to be chosen, it appears.

The JCF will act as a centralised center to keep labelled datasets, and contain various tools to help suppliers construct and assess items for the military. ‘It will assist push and democratise AI throughout the department,” said Nand Mulchandani, JAIC’s Performing Director.

The Flying force’s Platform One is an environment of software and IT services, including RepoOne, which is comprised of a network of “solidified and examined containers” and code to solidify Kubernetes. ®
