The business collaborated with AI start-up Megvii to test a video camera system that anticipates people’s age, sex, and ethnic background based on their face. Among the functions the software application was capable of performing was labelled as “Uyghur alarm”, according to documents (which you can see here) shared with the Washington Post

The feature, checked in 2018, supposedly sends an alert signal to police in China whenever its cams favorably recognize somebody as a Uyghur. There is ample evidence that the Chinese Communist Party monitors the Muslim population in regions like Xinjiang and puts in control utilizing technology like facial acknowledgment.

Huawei said it was “just a test and it has not seen real-world application. Huawei just supplies general-purpose items for this kind of screening. We do not supply custom-made algorithms or applications.” Megvii declared its systems was not designed to target specific ethnic groups.
