The mayor of Ithaca, New York, is set to propose a plan to eliminate the city’s police force and change it with a brand-new civilian-led firm, GQ reported Monday.

According to an almost 100- page report reviewed by GQ, Ithaca mayor Svante Myrick will recommend abolishing the city’s existing authorities department and change with a “Department of Neighborhood Solutions and Public Safety.”

The plan would replace the department, staffed with 63 officers that costs $125 million a year to run, with a company with armed “public security workers” and unarmed “community option employees,” all under the helm of a civilian director of public security rather than an authorities chief, GQ reported.

” IPD presently invests one third of its time reacting to require service that essentially never result in arrests,” Myrick wrote in the report’s introduction, according to GQ. “Those calls, as well as a majority of patrol activity, can and need to be handled by unarmed Neighborhood Option Workers well trained in de-escalation and service shipment. This will enable our brand-new Public Security Workers to focus on avoiding, interrupting and solving serious crime.”

The main objective of the plan is to lower the number of encounters in between civilians and armed officers, GQ reported. Service calls will be assessed to figure out whether an armed or unarmed respondent is essential for the situation, or if it should be contracted out to a different public entity entirely.

GQ likewise reported that calls regarding psychological health crises will be “outsourced to a standalone system of social workers based upon the CAHOOTS program originated in Eugene, Oregon.”

In an interview with GQ on Sunday, Myrick told the publication that he acknowledged his plan is a “extreme thing for a city and a mayor to do.”

” Everyone wants the police to perform better when they show up, everyone wants that,” Myrick informed GQ. “What this plan is saying is that we likewise desire the cops to appear less– and that’s a radical thing for a city and a mayor to do.”

Last summer season, the Black Lives Matter protests triggered by the death of George Floyd restored calls for police reform– particularly, defunding and eliminating police departments

Advocates for defunding the cops demanded that financing be diverted from the authorities department and instead offered to social programs and advancement, Expert’s Ellen Cranley reported.

While some departments have seen big spending plan cuts in the wake of the demonstrations– consisting of $150 million in cuts for the Los Angeles Authorities Department and the Austin Police Department, respectively– the move of abolishing and recreating police departments has been more or less unprecedented prior to Myrick’s proposition.

Myrick, now 33, has actually been at chances with Ithaca’s police union in previous years, raising the concern if the union will support his strategy to reform the department, which he hopes to have up-and-running by summer 2023.

” I do believe it will be a huge fight,” Myrick told GQ.
