Worrying figures show a 81 per cent Covid case rise in England as the country’s unlocking on June 21 again comes under scrutiny – but what is the rate where you are?

Of the 315 local regions across the country, 256 have seen an increase for the seven days to June 5.

The news comes as the number of coronavirus cases in the UK has risen by 74 per cent since this time last week.

A further 7,540 infections have been recorded, and today’s increase was the highest daily jump since the end of February.

Another six deaths were announced today, the latest government data told.

It is still unclear if government lockdown restriction will be lifted as planned in less than a fortnight.

South Ribble, Burnley, Blackburn with Darwen, Stockport and Ribble Valley have been confirmed as the areas with the biggest week-on-week hike in cases.

But of the 315 local areas in England, 56 – 18 per cent – have seen a fall, while three are unchanged.

The figures are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire continues to have the highest rate, with 867 new cases in the seven days to June 5.

That is the equivalent of 579.2 cases per 100,000 people, up from 438.9 in the seven days to May 29.

Rossendale in Lancashire has the second highest rate, with Bolton in Greater Manchester third.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has meanwhile warned the vaccine rollout may not be enough to go ahead with unlocking on June 21.

“The reason we do the steps on the roadmap with five week intervals is really to give us time to look at all the data as it comes in and assess the state of the pandemic before we go forward to the next step,” he said.

The five areas with biggest week-on-week rises:

South Ribble (up from 114.6 to 285.2)

Burnley (126.0 to 286.8)

Blackburn with Darwen (438.9 to 579.2)

Stockport (80.4 to 203.5)

Ribble Valley (152.7 to 272.6)

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on June 9 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
