Shericka Jackson, the 100m bronze medallist, sensationally crashed out in the 200m heats for slowing down before crossing the line.

As a result, she missed out on qualification for the final by four one-thousandths of a second.

Jackson, the third-fastest in the world over 200m, finished fourth in the heats

“Shericka Jackson was almost just jogging round,” former Olympic middle distance runner Steve Cram exclaimed as he watched on in disbelief.

“What on Earth? Why take such risks?

“I’m sorry to sound exasperated but I am, on her behalf, on her coach’s behalf and her team-mates. It’s just not necessary.”

As a result, she will not be able to add to the bronze she won in the 100m alongside Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

Jackson appeared to be cruising in lane two but seemed unaware of her surroundings as she neared the finish line.

Perhaps attempting to conserve energy she took her foot off the gas too soon and paid the price.

“She obviously misread, she paid the price,” Jamaican sprint coach Stephen Francis said afterwards.

“She is not a senior athlete, she is a senior athlete in the 400m and a rookie at the 200m. I expected her to do better. She will learn.”

There were no problems for her two compatriots in the 100m clean sweep, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who advanced safely through.

Britain’s world champion Dina Asher-Smith was absent as a hamstring injury forced her to withdraw following the 100m semi-finals.

The final will take place on Tuesday.
