With experts warning of a back-to-school Covid surge, what feels again like indifference and disinterest at the heart of Government is frightening.
Because this killer isn’t yet beaten.
Today’s reported 61 deaths and 33,196 fresh infections across the UK are a grim reminder the virus is still taking lives despite the remarkable success of NHS vaccinations.
Schools have already returned in Scotland but in England, where Education Secretary Gavin Williamson makes every problem worse, parents and families are growing understandably concerned.
Nobody with any sense ever pretended decisions would be easy when it’s necessary to return life to as normal as possible while still suppressing this deadly virus.
What we are all entitled to expect however is rational leadership. That, alas, isn’t on this Government’s curriculum.
Not fit to lead
Lions led by donkeys. Britain’s returning Afghanistan evacuation heroes performed brilliantly in the face of mortal danger.
The courage, professionalism and compassion of our armed forces and civilians working with them were truly inspiring.
On the other hand their political masters, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, proved once again they’re not up to the job.
All the talk of Global Britain is hollow propaganda from a bunch of incompetents.
We’ve witnessed the best and worst of Britain. Johnson and Raab let us down. The military and their allies did us proud.
Ill thought out
Tory plans to end free prescriptions in England for over-60s by raising the qualifying age to 66 would harm health.
Why do all patients in Wales and Scotland enjoy free medicines when people in England must pay £9.35? Because Labour are in power in Wales, the SNP in Scotland but in England we’re at the mercy of the Tories.
