Ghislaine Maxwell is currently standing trial in one of the most infamous underage sex trafficking cases ever reported.
After 17 months in jail, she’s facing the jury in Manhattan’s federal court, New York.
Months of pre-trial hearings have led up to the trial, which will decide whether Ghislaine Maxwell recruited and groomed young girls on behalf of her one-time boyfriend and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The trials have been attended by some of her siblings, who have sat behind her in the court room, showing public support.
The family appearances are a public reminder that the shamed socialite has a life and family unit that extended before and beyond the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
But who are the Maxwell family, where did Ghislaine make her mountains of money and what was her life like before the scandal?
Does Ghislaine Maxwell have family?
Ghislaine Maxwell grew up in a big family with her french-born mother, Elizabeth Maxwell and Billionaire media proprietor father, Robert Maxwell.
The youngest of nine children, she was born just two days before a calamitous car accident left her 15-year-old brother in a fatal coma.
Ghislaine’s mother later wrote in her autobiography that the accident had a massive impact on the whole family, claiming that Ghislaine developed anorexia at three-years-old.
Despite the tragic history of the family, some of the brothers and sisters are believed to have remained close. The shamed former socialite has had the enduring support of her brother Ian and sister Isabel throughout her trial.
Talking of Ghislaine’s relationship with Jeffree Epstein, Ian Maxwell said: “Ghislaine has always kept her private life private … [the siblings] did not see or know about their friendship in any detail at all.”

Ian Maxwell has faced his own share of public scandals himself, having been cleared of fraud in a high profile case alongside his brother, Kevin Maxwell and others in 1996.
The cluster of siblings grew up in a lavish 53-room mansion in Oxford and are believed to have enjoyed an idyllic childhood, despite their fierce father’s overbearing nature.
Ghislaine’s brother, Ian described being around his father as ‘quite tense’.
Telling ABC, “He was demanding and difficult, [I] tended to not be too close if [I] could avoid it”.
Despite this, Ghislaine is reported to have had a close relationship with her father, Robert.
In fact, Robert ended up naming his yacht ‘The Lady Ghislaine’ after his youngest and most favoured child.
Ghislaine Maxwell as a young woman
Ghislaine Maxwell studied at Marlborough college, the prestigious private school attended by the likes of Kate Middleton.
She then went on to Oxford University, where a fellow student Dafydd Jones described her as “innocent, beautiful, privileged… in Oxford she wasn’t part of the cool crowd.”
This all seemed to change for Ghislaine, as she graduated and went on to schmooze her way through the glamorous social scene of 1980s London.
She worked on projects in her father’s lucrative companies and mixed with high profile celebrities like Princess Diana.
It’s believed that Ghislaine spent a large amount of time in the late 1980s aboard her father’s yacht, The Lady Ghislaine, which was equipped with a Jacuzzi, sauna, gym and disco.
She has never publicly talked of the moment she met disgraced financier J effrey Epstein, but its reported that the pair were introduced by Robert Maxwell in the late 1980s.
The two high-profile socialites shared a lavish life for several years, in the early 1990s and its reported that they remained closely associated for the decades following.
What is Ghislaine Maxwell’s net worth?
Maxwell is worth an estimated £7.4million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, although her various assets and accounts are likely to mean her net worth is actually far bigger.
