An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United transfer target Darwin Nunez…

What’s the talk?

According to Portuguese outlet Record, via The Mirror, the Magpies will need to splash out €80m (£67m) in order to strike a deal with Benfica this summer.

Arsenal and Manchester United are also said to be keen on the attacker, who has previously attracted the interest of European giants Barcelona and AC Milan.

Would Nunez be a good signing?

Shearer 2.0

PIF could land Newcastle their next Alan Shearer in a deal for Nunez, as his phenomenal goalscoring record suggests that he would be a prolific scorer for the Magpies, whilst he also has room to improve even further at the age of just 22.

The young attacker has the potential to develop over the years, with his former manager Jorge Jesus previously tipping him to reach the top of the game, stating: “All this decision-making ability, finishing and speed… He was Benfica’s most expensive purchase, and when there is no pandemic, he will be the most expensive sale. He will be a world-class player. Unfortunately for me, maybe I will lose him in a short time.”

This means that the Magpies would be signing a striker who has the scope to play for the club for many years, much like Shearer did. They could find their long-term number nine to consistently find the net at St James’ Park and become a fan favourite.

Shearer ended his career with 206 goals in 405 appearances for the Toon Army, which means that he scored a goal every 1.96 matches for the club. He was a sensational goalscorer throughout his career on Tyneside, and Nunez’s statistics offer a glimpse into how close he could get to the Geordie legend.

Ameobi celebrates a Newcastle goal

Who scored more goals for Newcastle? An easy one to start…

The Uruguayan has scored 26 goals in 33 games for Benfica in all competitions this season – a goal every 1.26 outings. He has found the back of the net 40 times in 77 matches for the Portuguese club in total in his career, which works out at one every 1.92 games.

This shows that he has been scoring at a stunning rate for his current club, netting more frequently for the Eagles than Shearer did for Newcastle – albeit with a significantly smaller sample size.

If Nunez can replicate anywhere near those numbers in the Premier League, he would be an incredible signing for the Magpies and become the club’s new talisman at the top end of the pitch. This is why PIF must swoop to secure a deal for the attacker…
